Visit Dog Iron Ranch and tour the log-walled, two-story post-Civil War home where Will Rogers was born on November 4, 1879. Built in 1875, the house is an example of the vernacular interpretation of the Greek Revival style of architecture that was typical throughout the South during this period. (An almost identical house exists on the outskirts of Guntersville, Alabama.) The Oologah house is a comparatively rare surviving example of buildings on the former Indian Territory frontier. Clem Rogers added clapboard siding and the place was called “the White House on the Verdigris.”
Dog Iron Ranch also features an era-correct barn with a climate-controlled classroom and historical video program that runs throughout the day. The 400-acre ranch, located on the shore of Lake Oologah, is also home to Texas Longhorn cattle and other livestock. Picnic areas, a grass airstrip and RV hook-ups (April-September) are also available.
